A wrinkle is a fiber-path defect created when plies buckle or move out of their intended orientation. Bridging occurs when a layup spans a corner, recess or geometric transition instead of conforming to the tool surface. If blank shape, fiber orientation, corner geometry, interply slip or material temperature is wrong, extra force may simply consolidate the defect into the part and can be accompanied by local thinning, resin squeeze flow or further fiber distortion. Correct the layup and preforming condition first, then validate a repeatable closing, heating, pressure and cure cycle.

For a press buyer, this means that maximum tonnage alone is a poor selection method. The mold must fit the platen, daylight and stroke must support loading and removal, and the available force must meet the real projected-area requirement. The preforming and closing sequence must also suit the selected material. Han Chang’s Carbon Fiber / Glass Fiber Hot Press Molding Machine is available in 37–800 ton specifications for selection around the material, projected molding area, cavity count and tooling envelope.

Wrinkling and bridging are not the same surface defect

Wrinkling is in-plane or out-of-plane waviness produced after a ply experiences shear, compression or restricted interply movement. It changes the intended fiber path and local laminate thickness; a surface that looks flat after closing does not prove that the internal plies are correctly aligned.

Bridging occurs when prepreg hangs across a radius, groove or recess and does not contact the tool. If the unsupported region cannot move and conform during closing, the molded part may contain a resin-rich zone, porosity, thickness variation or a secondary wrinkle.

A peer-reviewed study of plain-woven thermoset carbon-fiber prepreg explains that plies forming over a non-developable tool experience tensile, compressive and shear deformation. Restricted tow movement can cause local stacking, bridging or wrinkling. Temperature changes resin viscosity and prepreg deformability, but its test temperatures are material-specific evidence—not a universal production recipe.

Why extra pressure cannot restore the intended fiber path

Continuous fibers have very low extensibility along their length. Corners, double curvature and thickness transitions must therefore be accommodated by in-plane shear, interply slip and local bending. If the blank edges are over-constrained, friction prevents slip or the blank cannot fit the tool geometry, excess length is relieved through waviness or buckling.

Pressure is necessary for contact and consolidation, but it does not replace the required material movement. Increasing force after a wrinkle has formed may flatten the outer appearance while leaving internal fiber misalignment. Published prepreg-forming research also shows that higher pressure and temperature can increase pressure-gradient-driven squeeze flow and local radius thinning. “Use more pressure” is therefore not a universal correction.

Trace the location before changing one pressure number

Observation

Check first

Avoid assuming

Layup spans an inside corner or recess

Blank shape, layup sequence, preforming contact and tool geometry

The press is necessarily undersized

Waves form around an outside radius

Interply slip, edge restraint, fiber orientation and laminate thickness

A visually flat surface proves internal quality

Local thinning occurs at a radius

Material temperature, resin flow, pressure gradient and closing sequence

More force is automatically safer

The same location fails every cycle

Tool geometry, blank cut, positioning and boundary condition

It is only random operator placement

Defect location moves between batches

Thawing/out-life condition, tack, placement and transfer consistency

Tool alignment is always the root cause

A more effective order for correcting wrinkles and bridging

1. Lock the material and layup baseline

Record the prepreg grade, resin system, batch, storage and thawing condition, out-life, reinforcement form, ply angles and ply count. Tack, interply friction and cure behavior vary by material, so an unverified heat-and-pressure recipe should not be transferred between prepregs.

2. Map each defect back to the part and tool

Mark inside and outside radii, double curvature, thickness transitions, holes and ribs, together with the fiber direction of every ply. When the wrinkle repeatedly follows a geometric transition, examine blank cutting, layup order, local excess material and preforming before requesting a larger press.

3. Establish the preform before cure pressing

For complex shapes, asking final mold closing to perform draping, consolidation and cure at the same time makes material movement difficult to diagnose. Depending on the material and part, evaluate staged draping, local compaction, preforming or a validated blank pattern. Any heat-assisted forming condition must follow the prepreg supplier’s data and trials.

4. Build a controlled forming window

Keep the material, layup and tool fixed while comparing closing behavior, material condition, pressure build-up and cure settings one variable at a time. Review consecutive parts and use sectioning or the required quality method to examine internal plies; do not approve a process from one cosmetically attractive surface.

5. Confirm press capacity and repeatability last

Required force starts with the material’s molding pressure, projected area and cavity count. Then verify platen size, mold closed height, daylight, stroke, heating requirement and removal space. Han Chang’s standard composite hot-press range covers 37–800 ton and can be specified with an optional upper or lower ejector according to the tool’s retention and ejection design. Final configuration still follows the actual material, mold and trial conditions.

What should the RFQ include?

A 3D part file or cross-section showing internal and external radii, double curvature and thickness transitions;

prepreg supplier, resin system, reinforcement form, ply angles, ply count and supplier-recommended process data;

blank dimensions, cutting method, preforming steps and material-transfer method;

mold footprint, weight, closed height, heating, venting, locating and ejection arrangement;

location photos and sectional evidence of wrinkles, bridging, thinning or fiber misalignment;

target output, operator plan, loading/unloading route and acceptance method.

These inputs allow force, platen, daylight, stroke and workflow to be selected together instead of using high tonnage to mask a tooling or layup problem.
