Once the resin reaction accelerates, heat released by curing can instead drive the internal temperature above the tool temperature. Thermal lag calls for better heat transfer and adequate effective dwell; excessive exotherm calls for a material-approved change to the ramp, staged holds or heat-removal path. Raising the setpoint is not a universal fix.

This matters when carbon-fiber or glass-fiber parts combine thin walls with local thick sections. A useful process decision separates the temperature the equipment controls from the thermal history the resin actually experiences.

Four quantities that should not be treated as one

A setpoint is the target entered into the control system. Measured tool temperature describes one location, not every mold surface. Internal part temperature depends on heat transfer through the tooling and charge, as well as heat generated by the resin. Degree of cure describes how far the resin reaction has progressed; it depends on the actual temperature history and time, judged against the material and finished-part requirements.

A hard surface or a momentary temperature reading is not enough to establish a qualified cure. The Composites Knowledge Network guide to cure and thermal management identifies resin behavior, relative tool and part thickness, tool material and the cure cycle as contributors to part temperature history. For compression molding, heat conduction and resin heat generation must be considered together.

Why can a thick region lag first and overheat later?

Heat travels from the heated tooling into the composite charge. A longer thermal path, substantial tool thermal mass or uneven local heating can delay the core while a nearby tool sensor already indicates the target temperature. Starting a cure timer from that reading can leave the critical region with less effective dwell than expected.

Thermoset curing also releases heat. If a reacting region produces heat faster than its surroundings remove it, the local temperature can rise further. Thick sections and resin-rich regions deserve attention, but the result depends on the resin, geometry and thermal boundary conditions. A thick part does not inevitably overheat, and a carbon-fiber label does not establish uniform through-thickness heat transfer.

Both behaviors can occur during one cycle: early thermal lag followed by a reaction-driven peak. Looking only at the final temperature misses the distinction.

Match the correction to the behavior

The core lags without an excessive reaction peak

Improve the path by which heat reaches the critical region. Tooling and process engineers can review heater placement, platen-to-tool contact, heavy tool sections and differences between the upper and lower mold. Extending dwell alone may conceal a persistently cold tool region rather than correct it.

Where the heat distribution is appropriate but the section needs more time to equilibrate, develop the ramp and dwell around the material supplier’s cure specification. Use the measurement basis defined for that process; do not assume the controller’s countdown proves effective core dwell. Check thinner regions as well, so accommodating the slowest location does not push another region outside its permitted window.

The internal temperature rises above the tool during reaction

First separate measurement error or heating-control variation from a genuine resin exotherm. If reaction heat is responsible, the material and process team can evaluate a slower ramp or staged holds within the resin’s approved processing limits, allowing heat to leave as curing progresses. Tool engineers may also need to review the heat-removal path. Simply increasing mold temperature can accelerate the reaction and worsen the peak.

A lower peak is not the only acceptance criterion. The revised cycle must still achieve the required cure and finished-part properties. A published study of thick carbon/epoxy laminates describes reducing a thermal spike while maintaining cure at the laminate center. Its abstract supports this two-part objective, not a universal recipe for press-molded composites.

The thermal history is acceptable but defects remain

Investigate material storage and usable life, layup or charge placement, resin flow, venting and consolidation. Voids, delamination and appearance defects have several possible causes; a photograph alone does not diagnose undercure. Likewise, reheating a rejected part is not automatically an acceptable repair. Post-cure or rework must follow the material and product requirements.

Use a thermal trial to decide what to change

Where the tool and process permit it, qualified personnel can plan measurements that distinguish the heating input, critical tool regions and thick part sections. Internal measurements may require trial tooling or representative test parts, with sensor placement that does not disturb mold closure, consolidation or the part structure.

Compare heating, dwell and reaction stages on the same time axis. The trial should resolve whether heat arrives too slowly, reaction heat cannot escape, or a proposed change satisfies both the cold region’s cure requirement and the hot region’s temperature limit. Combine thermal evidence with the material’s specified cure or property checks before accepting the revised cycle.

What this means when buying a composite hot press

Han Chang’s Carbon Fiber / Glass Fiber Hot Press Molding Machine combines hydraulic force with mold heating for suitable carbon-fiber- and glass-fiber-reinforced molding materials. It offers 37–800 ton force specifications, with an upper or lower ejector available on request. It is a practical starting point for factories adding composite molding or matching equipment to existing tools.

When comparing a hydraulic compression moulding press, select force around the material’s pressing requirement, projected molding area and cavity count. Match platen size, daylight and stroke to the complete tool and removal space. Then address the thermal process separately: higher tonnage does not directly solve core undercure, and heater capacity alone does not demonstrate tool uniformity or cure completion.

If the project needs a particular ramp program, measurement interface, heating-zone arrangement or heat-removal provision, include that requirement in the press-and-tool discussion and define the supply scope in the quotation. Thermoplastic melting and cooling cycles also need a different assessment from the thermoset curing mechanisms discussed here.

Start with the thick region and the resin specification

Explore the composite hot-press range and send a part section, a photo of the thick region, the material supplier’s cure information or your existing mold details. You can start without a completed equipment specification. If a thermal trial is available, include its measurement locations and cycle alongside the results.

Discuss your composite hot-press project with Han Chang. Match usable mold space, pressing force, heating requirements and ejection options to the part. Establishing whether the problem is delayed heat transfer or trapped reaction heat makes the equipment discussion more useful than choosing a larger press by default.

Thick thermoset composite regions can lag behind the tool during heating and later develop an exothermic peak.
